What is AI visibility? An ecommerce guide

Short answer

AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode name and recommend your brand and products when shoppers ask the questions you should answer. For an ecommerce brand it is measured per question and per product, as a share of many answers across repeated runs, never as a single rank.

Shoppers now ask AI assistants what to buy, and the assistant answers with a short list of products. Whether your products are on that list, and what the assistant says about them, is your AI visibility. This guide defines what AI visibility is for an ecommerce brand, how it relates to GEO and AEO, and how to measure it without fooling yourself.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode name and recommend your brand and products when shoppers ask questions you should answer. For a store, it is measured per question and per product, as a share of answers.

Three parts of that definition do the work.

  • How often. AI visibility is a frequency, not a position. The same question asked twice rarely returns the same list, so the only stable measure is your share across many answers.
  • How accurately. Being named is half of it. If the assistant gets your product’s use, size or audience wrong, the mention can cost you the sale.
  • The questions you should answer. Your visibility is measured against the questions your shoppers ask, in their words. Being visible for your own brand name proves little. Being visible for “unscented soap for a gym bag” is what sells the product.

For an ecommerce brand, the unit is the product. A store can be visible for one product and absent for twenty others, which a single brand score hides.

It also differs from search visibility in ways that change how you measure it:

Why does AI visibility matter for ecommerce brands?

More of the shopping journey now starts inside an AI answer. Adobe measured a 693.4% rise in traffic from generative AI tools to US retail sites in the 2025 holiday season, and Pew found Google users click fewer links when an AI summary appears. The choice comes before the click.

The traffic is growing from a small base. Adobe, drawing on more than 1 trillion visits to US retail sites, reported that traffic from generative AI tools rose 693.4% from November 1 to December 31, 2025, against the prior year. Adobe adds that “the base of users remains modest.”

The clicks are shrinking where AI answers appear. The Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, across 68,879 Google searches, 12,593 of which showed an AI summary.

Put together: fewer shoppers click through to compare, and the answer they read already names a few products. If yours is not among them, you are not in the comparison at all.

And when an assistant does name you, its description is often the first one the shopper reads. A wrong size, use or audience in that answer is a visibility problem too, which is why accuracy belongs in the definition.

What is the difference between AI visibility, GEO and AEO?

AI visibility is the outcome you measure. GEO, generative engine optimization, and AEO, answer engine optimization, are names for the work that aims to improve it. The two terms are used as synonyms, and Google counts both as part of SEO for its own AI features.

GEO started as a research term. The 2023 paper that introduced GEO, later published at KDD 2024, framed it as helping content creators improve “their content visibility in generative engine responses.” It reported gains of up to 40% on its own visibility metric in a research setup, with its best results from adding citations, quotations and statistics to source pages.

Platforms now use the terms too. Microsoft Advertising describes GEO as how you win the recommendation in AI-driven discovery. Google’s optimization guide, updated July 10, 2026, describes AEO and GEO as terms for work “focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences.”

Google then adds its own view: for Google Search, optimizing for generative AI search “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. The same guide says you don’t need llms.txt files, or to break content into small chunks, to appear in Google Search.

So which word should you use? It matters less than the measurement behind it. GEO and AEO describe effort. AI visibility tells you whether the effort worked.

How do you check your AI visibility?

Ask the questions your shoppers ask, in several phrasings, many times each, on each assistant they use, and count how often your products appear. Report the share with its sample size and the range across runs. One answer, or one fixed prompt, is not a measurement.

Each step below fixes a known way that AI visibility numbers mislead.

How an honest AI visibility measurement is built

  1. 1 Shoppers' questions

Start from what shoppers type when they need your product, not your brand name. Those are the questions where a shopper is still choosing.

  2. 2 Several phrasings

Ask each question in more than one wording. In a May 2026 study, two wordings of a shopper's question overlapped by only about 14 to 29% in recommended brands, against 50 to 61% when the same prompt was rerun.

  3. 3 Many runs

Repeat each phrasing. In a SparkToro study of 2,961 runs, ChatGPT and Google's AI returned the same list of brands less than 1 time in 100.

  4. 4 Each assistant

Measure ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode separately. They retrieve from different systems: Google from its Search index, ChatGPT from pages read by OpenAI's search crawler and from merchant data.

  5. 5 Share with its sample

Report how often you appear as a share of answers, with the number of answers and the range across runs. A share without its sample size cannot be compared over time.

The second step is the easiest to skip. The authors of the paraphrase study warn that counting mentions over a fixed prompt set mostly measures which wording the tracker picked, not how the model sees the brand. More phrasings per question reduce that problem.

For Google’s own AI features, the guide points to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. For other assistants, there is no official report, so you measure from the outside. Check first that they can read your site at all:

What is a good AI visibility score?

There is no industry standard, and a single score without its method tells you little. A useful number names the questions asked, the assistants, the number of answers, the dates and the range across runs. Compare yourself with your own baseline and your competitors on the same questions.

Ask four things of any AI visibility score before you trust it:

  1. Which questions? Your brand name or your shoppers’ needs.
  2. How many answers? A share of 10 answers and a share of 1,000 are different claims.
  3. Which assistants and when? Results differ by assistant and change as models change.
  4. What range? The spread across runs tells you whether next month’s change is real.

Sample size is the one most often missing. 1 of 10 answers and 10 of 100 are both 10%. The first can turn into 0 of 10 next month by chance alone. The second needs a real shift in the answers to move far.

SparkToro’s research reached a similar conclusion: visibility across many prompts run many times is a reasonable metric, and a rank position in AI is not. Google says of its own systems that “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.”

A baseline can be very low, and that is useful to know. One of our users, the Shopify skincare brand Jericho, was recommended in 1 of 225 answers (0.44%) when we first measured it in September 2026, across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. That number is a starting point to measure against, not a grade.

That is the measurement we built SourceVision around. We ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your shoppers ask, many times over, and report how often you appear, with the range across runs. Then we draft what each product page is missing, from facts you confirm, and nothing is written without your approval. See how it works.

How do you increase AI visibility?

Make your products easy to find, read and match. Let AI crawlers in, keep product data complete and current, and make each product page state what the product is, who it is for, how it differs, and answer real shopper questions. Then measure again on the same questions.

Four actions cover most of the ground:

  1. Open the door. Check that the assistants’ search crawlers can read your product pages, and that your products reach AI channels through your platform’s catalog.
  2. Complete the data. Category, price, availability, images and reviews, kept current.
  3. Write the specifics. What the product is, who it is for, what it is not, and answers to the questions shoppers ask.
  4. Measure the same questions again. A change you cannot see in the numbers is a change you cannot manage.

The steps are the same basics that serve shoppers. Google says there are “no additional requirements” to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. The paraphrase study adds one lesson: when a shopper’s question adds a need or a constraint, the recommended brands change. Specific pages give assistants more to match those questions against.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. Google says its AI features in Search are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, so SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google also says there are no additional requirements to appear in those features beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.

Will GEO overtake SEO?

For Google Search, Google counts the two as one: its guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. Other assistants, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, read the web and merchant data through their own systems, so the work extends past Google, but it starts from the same basics.

How to stay visible in AI search?

Keep your pages crawlable by the AI assistants' search crawlers, keep product data complete and current, and make each product page say what the product is, who it is for and how it differs. Then measure regularly, because AI answers change from one run to the next.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is work aimed at improving how content appears in answers from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. The term comes from a 2023 research paper, later published at KDD 2024. Google's guide groups it with answer engine optimization, or AEO, as work focused on visibility in AI search.

How do you measure AI visibility?

Ask the questions your shoppers ask, in several phrasings, many times each, across the assistants they use, and count how often your products appear. Report the share with its sample size and the range across runs. For Google specifically, Search Console has a Generative AI performance report.

What metrics make up AI visibility?

The core metric is how often you appear, as a share of answers. Useful companions are which competitors appear instead, whether the assistant describes your product accurately, and which sources it cites. A position or rank in a single answer is not a stable metric, because the same question rarely returns the same list twice.
